CFMEU protesters ambush Matthew Guy press conference
Chaos has ensued before the Victorian election, with union protesters gatecrashing a major announcement in the heart of Melbourne.
Angry protesters have gatecrashed a major announcement by the Victorian opposition on Tuesday morning in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD.
Victorian Opposition Leader Matthew Guy was spruiking a new plan for the eastern part of Federation Square when a mob of more than 20 CFMEU members started yelling “hands off our jobs, hands off our jobs”.
Mr Guy is reported to have said “this is intimidation and division but this is what the Premier has brought to Victoria”.
It’s understood the protests delayed Mr Guy’s press conference by half an hour.
Last month, CFMEU posters encouraging a vote for Premier Daniel Andrews despite him being a “pr**k” began to circulate in Melbourne construction sites.
“Dan might be a pr**k, be he’s a prick delivering for construction workers”, the poster read, alluding to projects such as the Suburban Rail Loop, which the poster said would keep construction workers in employment for 30 years.
Mr Guy was at Federation Square alongside Liberal front bencher and member for Caulfield David Southwick, announcing a plan to reinvigorate the CBD with a three-hectare city park.
The opposition said it would provide $5m for a business case to be undertaken on the feasibility of the park, which they said would connect Flinders St with the Yarra River.
“Exploring options to unlock three hectares of open, green space in the heart of our CBD is a real solution to boost liveability and vibrancy to Melbourne’s city centre,” Mr Guy said.
Mr Southwick said it was a plan to make Melbourne the world’s most liveable city again.
“Melbourne needs a fresh start and new ideas to get back to the place we all know and love,” he said.
“More open space that can host events on the doorstep of our CBD will be an enormous boost and help make Melbourne the world’s most liveable city once again.”
