Queensland’s east coast has been heavily battered by rain, as one Gold Coast town recorded a staggering 69mm in just half an hour.

Overnight, the Gold Coast town of Mudgeeraba was hit with 100mm of rainfall in six hours, recording 86mm of rain in an hour and 69mm in 30 minutes.

Blistering winds and heavy rainfall were so severe that the roof of a Woolworths in Morayfield collapsed.

Rain has been bashing Brisbane all morning, the capital recording 35mm over the last day, but conditions are expected to settle by the afternoon.

The Bureau of Meteorology confirmed that the severe storms were set to ease across the eastern part of the state in the coming days but warned that damaging winds and severe thunderstorms were to cease in the central parts of Queensland.

Powerful winds continue to thrash the southeast, with some residents of Tamborine Mountain complaining of their houses “shaking” amid the wild weather.

Hailstones as large as 7cm hit parts of the state and strong winds caused power lines to collapse.

The bureau has issued a warning to residents of central and northeastern Queensland, particularly north of Springsure and south of Ayr, to expect heavy winds and rain, which may result in flash flooding or severe damage to property.

Speaking to The Courier-Mail, Senior Meteorologist Steve Hadley said despite the rain and wind settling across the southeast coast, the ongoing storms around Morayfield and Caboolture could cause further flooding and damage.

“There are quite widespread showers up and down the southeast coast at the moment,” he said. “We could see fairly widespread showers continuing before that weather system moves away later in the day.”
