All three Australians in day one action lost while a fourth pulled out with injury at the French Open

The Australian contingent at the French Open started in double-digits but is down to singles after a trio of day one losses.

There wasn’t a single victory for any of the three Aussies in action on the opening day of the French Open with injury also forcing world no.68 Chris O’Connell to withdraw before his first match.

The quartet were among 11 Australians competing at Roland Garros with that number quickly whittled down to just seven amid widespread injury concerns.

Aleksandar Vukic almost didn’t get to the start line either and will need to have an MRI scan on an adductor injury he was carrying in his first-round defeat at the hands of China’s Zhizhen Zhang

Vukic, 28, battled through four sets before succumbing to the world No.44 Zhang Zhizhen 6-4 4-6 6-3 7-5 victory in a close two-hour and 46-minute contest.

Jordan Thompson suffered his fifth straight first round exit in Paris, losing to big-hitting German Maximilan Marterer, ranked 101 in the world, in straight sets.

Thompson, Australia’s second-highest ranked player at the event having jumped to 36 in the world, was humbled 6-3 6-2 6-0.

O’Connell’s tournament came to an end before he could even step on court forced out by injury with Finnish lucky loser Otto Virtanen taking his spot in the men’s singles draw.

Those men’s losses all came after Ajla Tomljanovic showed encouraging signs against Australian Open 2024 semi-finalist Dayana Yastresmka in their first-round women’s singles encounter before also succumbing.

Yastremska eventually edged out a 3-6 6-3 6-3 victory against Tomljanovic who is trying to work back to her best after an injury-riddled past 18 months.

“I should not leave this place having any negative thoughts, because it is only up from here, and my body so far has pulled up well, so that is a great thing,” Tomljanović, who had pulled out of her comeback tournament in Parma last week with a neck injury, said.

“But it feels like I have a mountain to climb right now.

“I’m still here. I’m eager. I still have that fire inside me to still keep going, but it definitely has been very challenging.

It was only the second match back since February for the former world number 32 following another recent health setback.
