Life as a Nazi's daughter
THIS is a beautifully made documentary about Monika Hertwig, the daughter of Nazi concentration camp mass murderer Amon Goeth.
THIS is a beautifully made documentary about Monika Hertwig, the daughter of Nazi concentration camp mass murderer Amon Goeth.
She has lived her life in the shadow of her father’s sins, trying to come to terms with the inheritance. Hertwig describes herself as a typical German housewife, although her English is excellent. She speaks to her husband and grandson in German, but the fact the English narration is in her own voice adds immeasurably to the authority and emotional impact of the program.
The climax comes when, 60 years after Goeth’s arrest and the liberation of the Plaszow concentration camp, Monika and Helen, a woman selected by Goeth to be a kind of domestic slave in his house, meet for the first time.
The meeting takes place in Goeth’s former villa, overlooking the camp.
