It’s a question that has haunted the Australian psyche for 25 years: What crime kept Joe, the protagonist of Paul Kelly’s unlikely Christmas anthem, from making his gravy?

This enduring mystery might finally find closure, courtesy of Binge, which has today unveiled its first original film, How To Make Gravy, inspired by the timeless song from the Australian troubadour.

The production, which will be filmed on the Gold Coast, will feature a cadre of beloved Australian actors such as Hugo Weaving, Daniel Henshall, Brenton Thwaites, Daniel Herriman, and Kate Mulvany. Agathe Rousselle, the French actor who starred in the Palme d’Or-winning body horror Titane, will make her English-language debut.

How To Make Gravy will also feature cameos from Indigenous Australian musicians Dallas Woods and Adam Briggs, who previously collaborated with Kelly in a performance of ‘All The Dumb Things’ for triple j’s Like A Version live performance segment.

The song was adapted for the screen by the ARIA-winning musician Meg Washington and Nick Waterman, who will also direct. They say that the film is “a uniquely Australian story, made for film lovers and music fans alike.”

“It’s a testament to Paul’s songwriting that the world and characters within the song are so vivid, and we are proud to have the honour of bringing it to life.”

Expanding its repertoire of original Australian content, Binge has unveiled The Last Anniversary, a screen adaptation of a novel penned by Liane Moriarty, the celebrated Australian author behind Big Little Lies. The project was made through the powerhouse collaboration of Hollywood hit-maker Bruna Papandrea’s Made Up Stories and Nicole Kidman’s Blossom Films.

Strife is another offering from Made Up Stories, the upcoming eight-part series was inspired by the memoir Work, Strife, Balance from MamaMia founder Mia Freedman.

Production is underway for the second season of Harriet Dyer and Patrick Brammall’s word-of-mouth comedy hit Colin from Accounts, which became the Foxtel Group’s most watched original scripted series of all time, and sold to multiple territories around the world.

The ACTA-winning legal drama The Twelve, starring Sam Neill, will also return for a second season.

New to Binge’s slate of Australian original releases is High Country, an eight-part mystery starring Leah Purcell AM as a detective transferred to the Victorian High Country to work a missing persons beat.

Amanda Laing, Chief Content & Commercial Officer, Foxtel Group & Managing Director Binge said, that the Foxtel Group remains “A committed champion for local, ground-breaking stories and voices in all genres.”

“We continue to be the partner of choice for the world’s biggest studios and content producers, providing an unmatched content slate from the largest and most diverse pipeline of partners globally.”
