Singer John Farnham has been admitted to hospital with a respiratory infection following a successful operation to remove a mouth cancer in August last year.

Farnham is “responding well” to specialist care, his wife Jill said in a statement issued on Friday by his record label.

The 73-year-old-singer is one of Australia’s most celebrated music artists. His hits include You’re The Voice – a single from Whispering Jack, the third-highest-selling album in Australian history.

“John continues his recovery following last year’s successful surgery,” his wife said. “He’s always been a strong and determined person with everything he’s ever done and we are all so very proud of him.

“He is responding well to the specialist care he’s receiving.”

The statement said Farnham had been receiving “ongoing treatment, care and rehabilitation support over recent months”.

“The family would like to reiterate their appreciation for all the medical staff that have attended to John over the past six months and for all the kind messages that have been received from across Australia and the world.”

Farnham in August last year underwent a surgery to remove a cancerous tumour from his mouth.

The family said at the time that there was “still a long road of recovery and healing ahead of us”.

The surgery reportedly involved removing a part of his jaw.

In June 2020, readers of The Australian voted Whispering Jack as the best chart-topping Australian album of all time, ahead of The Swing by the INXS and Diesel and Dust by Midnight Oil.

The album spent 25 weeks at No.1 in 1986.
