Ant-Man star Paul Rudd has a message for fans ahead of the latest instalment in the blockbuster franchise: get to the cinema – this isn’t a small-screen experience.

Hundreds of Marvel devotees swarmed Sydney’s Entertainment Quarter on Thursday, vying for a glimpse of Rudd and his co-star, Jonathan Majors, at a special release event for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

It has been five years since the last instalment of the Ant-Man franchise, and some fans had queued from 5am.

“This is a movie that should be seen at the cinema,” Rudd told The Australian.

“You just get lost in the world. It’s a communal experience, and you are completely transported into a different world.

“You don’t get that by watching a movie on your phone.”

To support his argument, Rudd told how he had “rolling tears” when he saw Cinema Paradiso at the movies. “I couldn’t control myself. It had a major effect on me. I remember thinking, ‘I don’t want to see that movie again for 10 years’.”

Don’t expect Ant-Man to be as emotionally gruelling. “I don’t think you’ll cry as much as I did in Cinema Paradiso,” Rudd said.

Director Peyton Reed echoed Rudd’s hopes that fans would opt for a big-screen viewing.

“I want audiences to experience Ant-Man on the biggest screen ever,” he said.

Quantumania is set to be released on February 16.
