Academy Awards nominations 2018: Who leads the field in this year’s Oscars

Our critics deliver their verdict on the best picture nominees as Margot Robbie celebrates her first nomination | FULL LIST

Australia’s Margot Robbie has received a Best Actress nomination for her work in I Tonya, where she plays controversial American figure skater Tonya Harding.

The nomination was expected and is the first for the former Neighbours starlet, who has taken Hollywood by storm in recent years.

Robbie is up against stiff competition and will face off against Oscars legend Meryl Streep, who has been nominated for her work in The Post, Frances McDormand for Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri, Sally Hawkins for The Shape of Water and Saoirse Ronan for Lady Bird.

It is Streep’s 17th nomination in the Best Actress category and 21st overall. The screen legend has won Best Actress twice, in 1982 for Sophie’s Choice and in 2011 for The Iron Lady. She also won Best Supporting Actress in 1979 for Kramer vs Kramer.

Australian Dunkirk editor Lee Smith has also been nominated for an Oscar for his work on the World War II epic.

The race for Best Actor will also be hotly contested with Daniel Day Lewis nominated for Phantom Thread, Timothee Chalamet for Call Me by Your Name, Daniel Kaluuya for Get Out, Gary Oldman for Darkest Hour and Denzel Washington for his role in Roman J. Israel, Esq.

David Stratton said:

“The Post is the kind of film that used to be far more common in the past when Hollywood treated its audience as grown-ups to an extent that seems hopelessly idealistic today. It’s to Spielberg’s credit that he wanted to tell this story, and that he and his formidable cast tell it so very well.” Read the full review here
