Under the oversized-sunglasses glare of Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of American Vogue and chief content officer of Condé Nast, the once-staid charity ball has mutated into the most esteemed fashion event on the calendar. It is also a night when smart-alec TikTokers stay up to declare the world’s richest and most glamorous “flops” — or to decree that a “motherquake” measuring 9.9 on the Richter scale has just shaken the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. That, of course, is where the whole spectacle unfolds.
