Creed star Jonathan Majors was arraigned in Manhattan on Sunday on several assault charges, after what the police describe as a “domestic dispute”.

The New York Police Department said that officers responded to a 911 call from an apartment in Chelsea just after 11am on Saturday. Investigators determined that the actor had been involved in a domestic dispute with a woman who alleged she had been assaulted.

Majors was taken into custody on Saturday in Manhattan without incident, authorities said. A judge on Saturday night ordered that the actor be released on his own recognisance, and granted a limited order of protection.

On Sunday, a spokesman for the Manhattan district attorney’s office said Majors had been arraigned on a complaint that included several misdemeanour charges, such as assault and aggravated harassment. His next court appearance is scheduled for May 8.

In the complaint, the unnamed female accuser claims Majors, 33, did “strike her about the face with an open hand, causing substantial pain and a laceration behind her ear.” She also claims he “put his hand on her neck, causing bruising and substantial pain.”

His lawyer has disputed the claims, saying that the actor “is completely innocent and is provably the victim of an altercation with a woman he knows.” Majors’ criminal defence lawyer Priya Chaudhry added, “we are quickly gathering and presenting evidence to the District Attorney with the expectation that all charges will be dropped imminently.”

Chaudhry also says there is video evidence and witness testimony that supported Majors account.
