Another Magpie miracle
There have been some miracle comebacks in Craig McRae’s time coaching Collingwood, but this was up there with the best of them.
They trailed by 54 points when North Melbourne kicked the first goal of the third quarter and were still 43 points behind at the 21-minute mark of the third quarter.
Then Collingwood got rolling in Brayden Maynard’s 200th match and kicked seven unanswered goals, with Jeremy Howe – who had moved forward at half-time – putting the Magpies in front with five minutes remaining.
Nick Daicos did the damage with eight disposals in the final quarter after his tagger Will Phillips was subbed out. North Melbourne reclaimed the lead through Brynn Teakle, but it was not enough as Norm Smith medallist Bobby Hill kicked his fifth goal.
A snap from North Melbourne’s Zac Fisher just missed with less than 30 seconds remaining. There were 11 Collingwood premiership players playing.
Rough for Kangaroos but future bright
It’s hard to pinpoint the player who ignited the Kangaroos. Perhaps it was Luke Davies-Uniacke’s 12 disposals in the first quarter or George Wardlaw’s five score involvements. Maybe the four goals Nick Larkey kicked as he pulled apart the Magpies’ captain Darcy Moore.
Could it have been Alastair Clarkson’s permanent relocation from the boundary to the coaches’ box, which began a week earlier? Or was it Tristan Xerri’s chase-down tackle on Lachie Sullivan before he kicked two second quarter goals.
All this without Jy Simpkin.
In the end, individuals were not the sole reason as the pressure North applied on Collingwood made the Magpies fumble and panic on the rare occasions they got their hands on the ball.
The loss will devastate the young Kangaroos, but it also should give them confidence they are on the right track as their young players showed they can play, and it was achieved without Jy Simpkin and two high draft picks; Colby McKercher and Zane Duursma.
Did the umpires miss another one?
It’s always hard to know, but Bailey Scott appeared to deserve a 50-metre penalty with a minute remaining when he marked on the 50-metre line and Collingwood players charged over the mark not aware it had been paid.
But it wasn’t the only decision to be questioned, many were asking why Will Phillips was subbed out of the match at three-quarter-time after quelling Nick Daicos for much of the match.
