Woman who killed both sons dies weeks after being released from prison

By Alexander Darling

A woman who killed her two sons – claiming it to be “the greatest act of love” she could have shown them – has died three weeks after being released from prison.

The Age has confirmed Donna Fitchett, 66, was found dead at a property in Prahran on Monday night.

Donna Fitchett was found guilty of murdering her two sons, Matthew Fitchett, 9, (left) and Thomas Fitchett 11.

Police said they visited after a request for a welfare check, and that the death is not being treated as suspicious.

The Age understands Fitchett left prison on February 25.

She was sentenced to 27 years in jail in September 2010, five years after she drugged and murdered sons Thomas, 11, and Matthew, 9, at their Balwyn North home.

During sentencing, Supreme Court Justice Elizabeth Curtain branded Fitchett’s actions her “greatest act of betrayal”.

Fitchett, who was 49 at the time, was first convicted of the murders in 2008, but successfully appealed and was granted a retrial in 2010.

She pleaded not guilty by reason of mental impairment.
