Police have arrested a man from Sydney’s eastern suburbs who they allege abused children in the grounds of a Catholic Church as a teen in the 1970s and 1980s.
In July last year, detectives from the Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command began investigating allegations of historical sexual and indecent assault of two boys on the grounds of Waverley’s Mary Immaculate Church.
The 55-year-old man was picked up by investigators at his Kingsford home on Thursday morning. He was taken to Waverley police station, where he was charged with four counts of indecent assault on male, buggery and attempt buggery.
The charges reflect the wording of the legislation at the time of the alleged offence.
“Police will allege in court that the offences were committed by the man when the boys were aged between six and 10 between 1979 and 1982,” police said in a statement.
“Investigations are continuing.”
The man was refused bail in Waverley Local Court on Thursday afternoon. He is due to reappear on Friday.
