Man dead following stand-off with police outside NSW hospital

A man has been shot dead following a stand-off with police outside a hospital on NSW’s Mid North Coast.

Police were called to Rouse Street in Wingham about 12.30pm on Thursday, following reports a man had fired several bullets into the air.

The man suffered fatal injuries after being shot by police outside the hospital.

Half an hour later, police confronted the man in the car park of Manning Base Hospital in Taree, nearly 12 kilometres away.

The man, who is believed to have been in his 30s, allegedly pointed the gun at police, and police returned fire, hitting him.

Officers rendered first aid and the man was taken to Manning Base Hospital where he died a short time later.

Police have established a crime scene along Pulteney Street and High Street and a blue tarp has been installed outside the hospital’s mental health and drug and alcohol clinical services unit where the man was shot.
