Trains cancelled, ‘extensive delays’ after urgent repairs at Central

Sydney’s train network has been plunged into chaos with extensive delays and multiple cancelled services due to urgent repairs at Central Station.

The worst of the delays are affecting the T9 Northern and T1 North Shore and Western lines.

Between 8am and 9am on Monday, more than a third of all services were cancelled from Burwood and the trains that were running were delayed.

On the T1 line there are delays of about 40 minutes. Commuters are urged to take the Metro if possible as Sydney Trains scrambles to add services.

Train services are cancelled or delayed after track repairs at Central Station.

There are a limited number of buses supplementing trains between Hornsby and Berowra, and between Campbelltown and Macarthur.

The T2, T3, T4 and T8 lines are also experiencing delays.

Transport for NSW’s rail operations director Jas Tumber told 2GB the delays were caused by a broken rail at Central Station.

“Because it is a significant broken rail, we are having to cut a section of the rail out and replace it this morning, which as you can imagine logistically is very complex to do whilst we’re still operating the network,” he said.

The repairs were completed by 11am, however, the Transport Management Centre warned delays would continue.

A freight train issue at Sutherland is also contributing to delays on the T4 line.

The delays are unrelated to an incident at Sydney Airport’s Domestic Terminal station on Sunday night where a man in his 30s collapsed and died on the platform. The station became a crime scene after NSW Ambulance paramedics performed CPR but could not revive the man. His cause of death has not been established.

“Officers from South Sydney Police Area Command established a crime scene and have commenced an investigation into the matter,” a police statement said.

“It is expected that a forensic examination of the man will be made in the coming days.”
