Report: Turbo misfires as Eels climb off foot of the ladder with big win

By Billie Eder

Friday should have been Tom Trbojevic’s night – it should have been the Manly fullback’s time to show Blues coach Laurie Daley he’d made a mistake not picking him in his NSW Origin I squad.

Instead, it was the Parramatta show, as Joash Papalii ran away with a try on debut to help the Eels to a 30-10 upset against the Sea Eagles without star players Mitchell Moses and Zac Lomax.

The Sea Eagles now tumble out of the top eight, as the Eels claimed back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

Trbojevic did have moments – he had his hand in both Lehi Hopoate’s first-half tries – but it was nowhere near the show-stopping performance you’d expect from a player of his calibre who’d been overlooked for the biggest series of the year.

Manly coach Anthony Seibold said his team were struggling to find consistency week-to-week.

“We lacked cohesion tonight. For whatever reason, we just didn’t look like we have been when we’ve been at our best,” Seibold said.

“I’ve got to give Parramatta credit, I think they completed at over 90 per cent, so they kept handing over the footy to us in deep yardage, and we just couldn’t find a way to get field position. The couple of times we did in the first half we scored, but ultimately, I was really disappointed because we’re just lacking consistency in some parts of our game at the moment.”

Trbojevic, who captained Manly on Friday in Daly Cherry-Evans absence, was deflated after the match.

“We didn’t win the field position battle, so it’s hard to attack out of your own end, so we weren’t good enough,” he said.

Parramatta, on the other hand, were gritty.

Even after the Eels lost Will Penisini in the second minute to concussion, the team rallied.

It meant Papalii made his debut via the bench much earlier than anticipated, but the 20-year-old came bounding onto the field, ready to play the next 78 minutes.

It wasn’t perfect, with Manly targeting Papalii’s side for both of Hopoate’s tries, but it was enough. The Eels’ rising star also managed a flick pass out the back to Jordan Samrani for Parramatta’s first try of the night.

Manly in general were clunky, and the team struggled to come up with any sort of attacking edge without halfback Daly Cherry-Evans who was away on Origin duties.

Second-string halfback Jake Arthur struggled to have any kind of meaningful impact on the game, and the Sea Eagles attack suffered as a result.

Second half tries for Isaiah Iongi and J’maine Hopgood all but sealed the win for Parramatta with 20 minutes to go, especially after Hopoate was denied a hat-trick and taken over the sideline.

There were only 13,500 fans at CommBank Stadium on Friday night, but when the full-time siren sounded, the crowd erupted.

Friday’s win lifts the Eels off the bottom of the ladder, with the two teams directly above them – Penrith and Newcastle – facing off against each other on Saturday.

Stats snapshot from the Eels’ runaway win

Eels run out 20-point winners

A bit of a spark here for the Sea Eagles – Luke Brooks making a half-break, Tom Trbojevic popping up and getting a good offload away – leads to a repeat set when Jazz Tevaga rolls a grubber into the in-goal. They get the ball back from the dropout and have one last throw of the dice before time runs out.

But the clock beats them to any late consolation try and it’s all too little too late for Manly, and a great night for this young Eels side. They didn’t look like wooden spoon contenders tonight.

Brooks denied by bunker

Luke Brooks has made a few big defensive misses tonight but he comes up with a big tackle on Isaiah Iongi and knocks the ball clear, then kicks ahead and regathers to score under the posts … except he doesn’t, with the referee spotting a knock-on by Brooks and the bunker confirming it.

Manly’s next raid ends in a dangerous bomb that is defused by a leaping Iongi.

Both young Eels fullbacks – Iongi and next-big-thing Joash Papalii, playing on the wing tonight – have looked great and suggest there’s a very promising future for the Eels No.1 jersey even after letting Clint Gutherson leave for the Dragons.

Russell takes Parra’s lead to 20

A needless penalty against Jazz Tevaga for overworking the face of the tackled player gives Sean Russell a shot at goal and he extends Parramatta’s lead to 20 with less than 15 minutes on the clock. There have been some big comebacks in the past few weeks but Manly will need a monster effort to score four times from here.

Luca Moretti, who has had a few big players and a few head-scratching moments tonight, comes up with a big tackle now to spill the ball clear from Ethan Bullemor’s grasp. Nothing is going Manly’s way right now.

Hopgood joins the party for Parramatta

And now Parramatta have gone down the other end and extended their lead, J’maine Hopgood taking a short ball from Isaiah Iongi and crashing over after a Dean Hawkins grubber ricocheted off a couple of players.

The Eels are on track for a big win here.

Hopoate hat-trick try denied by bunker

Another left-side shift for the Sea Eagles results in another Lehi Hopoate try – or is it? This time Hopoate’s spectacular dive into the corner looks a little too good to be true, and it is – with the winger’s arm left touching the turf over the sideline before he touched down.

Meanwhile Manly hooker Jake Simpkin has a hip pointer injury but is still a chance of returning tonight after having a painkilling needle.

Iongi slices through to extend Eels’ lead

Isaiah Iongi has shown flashes of brilliance at fullback for the Eels this year and he’s done it again, throwing a dummy to his right then bursting past Luke Brooks to score the first try of the second half.

After a very slow start to the season Jason Ryles’ men are looking better every week now, and it will be a real confidence-booster if they can get a big win tonight without Mitch Moses pulling the strings.

Second half underway

The Eels get the second half started and Manly play out a no-nonsense first set, with Tom Trbojevic taking the fourth hit-up of the set. Parramatta respond in kind and it’s safety-first stuff all round.

The Sea Eagles definitely have the talent to win this one but their defence is going to have to be a lot stronger after giving up four line breaks in the first half.
