A bushfire warning for Port Kennedy residents has been downgraded as firefighters conduct backburning to battle the blaze.

The watch and act warning remains in place for residents east of Bakewell Drive and west of Ennis Avenue, with authorities warning people should continue to monitor the conditions as they are changing.

Emergency services rushed to the scene after the fire was reported about 1.30pm on Tuesday.

A Department of Fire and Emergency Services warning said the fire was still not contained or controlled and was burning towards Ennis Avenue and Mandurah road.

About 22 hectares have been burnt, and several roads are closed including Port Kennedy Drive between Bakewell Drive and Ennis Avenue.

Miranda Morrison’s house was just outside the emergency warning zone, but she could still see flames from her front yard.

Earlier on Tuesday, Morrison told this masthead nearby residents were remaining vigilant.

“The wind is blowing away from us at the moment, but we’re keeping a close eye on it,” she said.

“We have a plan in place to leave if needed but hopefully won’t have to.”
