Tumbulgum Tavern
15/20
Modern Australian$$
While nights are fun and the food is fine, it is daytime when this place truly shines. It sprawls before the river, vast front deck, capacious beer garden and under-cover side area where you will dine on enormous serves of beautifully done, slightly old-fashioned tucker. A special of lamb's fry and chunky-style bacon is pure comfort on its bed of velvety, buttery mash; garlic prawns are mega and numerous in a subtle garlicky cream with rice. The place is popular with older patrons, benign bikie groups, over-excited children provided with their own playground - in short, with everyone; it's easy to see why bookings are essential.
