Wheelchair-bound man bashed in his home as thieves steal car, in brazen night time attack

A 67-YEAR-OLD wheelchair-bound man was attacked and bashed in his own Darwin home by four men overnight before they stole his specially fitted out car

A 67-YEAR-OLD wheelchair bound man is in hospital after he was attacked during a break-in overnight.

The man woke to the sound of four men trying to break into his home at Malak

2.46am.

Once inside the offenders kicked and punched the man, knocking him from his wheelchair.

NT Police Duty Superintendent Tony Deutrom said the group then stole the man’s car keys and fled in the car, which had a wheelchair attached.

“These offenders smashed their way through the front glass door before punching and kicking the victim and knocking him out of his wheelchair,” he said.

“The victim suffered cuts and bruises to the face.”

He was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital for assessment.

Forensic police officers remain at the scene.

One neighbour said they heard sounds and noises last night.

They said Marshall Crt was normally a quiet street. Despite this, most gates into properties are chained and padlocked.

The car was found in Karama after police received reports of a vehicle hooning through the suburb.

“The vehicle has been seized for a forensics examination and taken to the police compound,” Supt Deutrom said.

“The offenders in this matter are at large and Serious Crime (officers) have carriage.”

The offenders are described as young men, aged between 17 and 21.

Supt Deutrom said detectives were calling for witnesses and asked anyone with information to come forward by calling police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 and quote reference number 9470963.
