FRIGHTENED Wulagi residents have told how a group of up to 50 people armed with swords and meat cleavers engaged in a wild brawl on a suburban street on Easter Saturday.

Concerned residents who contacted the NT News said officers on the scene had told witnesses the “frightening” incident at about 9pm was an “organised attack”.

“Cops were there with the dogs, they told a bystander that it was an organised fight between up to 50 people involving swords and meat cleavers – one kid was cut to the bone on his fingers,” a witness said.

“I heard the resident screaming at the police ‘Look at my house, look at me, look at all the blood!’ – I can tell you it was mighty frightening.”

A police spokeswoman confirmed about 9pm on Saturday police responded to a disturbance in Wulagi where people were armed with weapons.

“Police were advised that a group of males arrived to the location and challenged a resident to a fight,” she said.

As a result, a 15-year-old male suffered injuries to his hand, a 17-year-old female was knocked out and a vehicle was damaged.

Investigations are ongoing and witnesses should contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

St John Ambulance spokeswoman Jeannette Button said paramedics treated one person for an injury in Wulagi on Saturday night but was unable to provide further details.

“We transported one male patient to Royal Darwin Hospital with an injury to his hand,” she said.

Another witness said the violence had started with a smaller fight about 30 minutes earlier before escalating on the nearby oval.

“I didn’t think anything of it because things like that happen all the time but then about half an hour later there was just this bloodcurdling screaming happening on the other side (of the oval),” they said.

“Then a car did a U-turn on the oval and then just flew down the road and then we heard a bang – I don’t know what it hit or if it just came to a sudden stop.”

A third person told the NT News that weapons had been found in the Wulagi Oval toilets.
