A TEENAGER allegedly spat in the face of cop who was conducting a roadside breath test and search of a car in Katherine on Thursday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Peter Malley said the act was abhorrent and would not be tolerated.

“The risk of contracting COVID-19 is always in the backs of minds of frontline workers but the last thing they expect or deserve is to have this type of disgusting assault committed upon them,” he said.

At 5.45pm Thursday, police saw a car allegedly travelling at 80km in a 50km zone.

They pulled over the car and the 56-year-old driver underwent a roadside alcohol and drug test.

He returned a positive result for the drug test and was placed under arrest.

A 16-year-old girl allegedly became aggressive and threatened to assault police as they were searching the car.

She then allegedly spat in the face of a police officer, and as a result was arrested.

Both were both taken to the Katherine Watch House.

The 56-year-old completed a secondary drug analysis which provided a positive result for methamphetamine and cannabis.

He was issued with a traffic infringement notice for driving with a prohibited drug in his system, exceeding the speed limit and allowing his body to extend from the car.

The 16-year-old was charged with assaulting a police officer.

She was bailed to appear in the Katherine Youth Justice Court on July 16.
