A MAN who drove into the front of the Six Tanks Brewery in a “revenge attack” during a “rampage” on Mitchell St last year has been jailed for at least two years.

Dale Talbot, 39, pleaded guilty in the Supreme Court on Thursday to recklessly endangering the life of three people who had allegedly assaulted him in the early hours of December 6.

Talbot also pleaded guilty to recklessly endangering serious harm to various other members of the public and damaging property by crashing through the front of the bar in his LandCruiser.

The court heard Talbot had started arguing with one of the other men at about 3am and agreed to fight him before changing his mind and running away.

The other man, his girlfriend and another man gave chase and when Talbot tripped and fell, the two other men kicked and punched him as he lay on the ground until bystanders stepped in.

Talbot then returned to his car and drove back towards Six Tanks where the other men had now armed themselves with chairs and when one of them threw a chair towards his car, Talbot mounted the kerb and drove directly at them.

The LandCruiser struck one of the men but the other managed to jump out of the way before punching Talbot through the car’s window up to 26 times after he came to a stop.

In setting a head sentence of four years in jail with a non-parole period of two years, Chief Justice Michael Grant said he took into account the provocation of the earlier assault and the punishment meted out after the crash.

“That’s even allowing for the fact that there was a gross disproportionality between your subsequent conduct and the initial assault,” he said.

But Chief Justice Grant said Talbot’s conduct had “placed many members of the community in danger of serious harm or loss of life.”

The other people involved in the initial altercation were also charged over the incident and are set to contest the charges in the Darwin Local Court.
