Jason Burdon escapes from the Adelaide Remand Centre

A PRISONER has escaped from the Adelaide Remand Centre in Currie St in the city.

Police confirmed Jason Burdon, 33, escaped from the centre’s kitchen area at about 9.55am this morning and is still on the loose.

Police were alerted just after 10.20am.

Burdon, of Humpty Doo in the Northern Territory, is believed to have stolen a black e-bike, before heading down Philip Street towards the CBD and then towards Port Road.

A rope made from items of clothing tied together could be seen hanging from a Remand Centre window between metal louvres that appeared to have been bent apart.

At around 12.45pm, Burdon reached the West Lakes Aquatic Centre where he was believed to have stolen a car.

The car was owned by a worker who was out on the water with other instructors and children.

The stolen e-bike was also dumped at the centre.

Superintendent Craig Wall said Burdon “does not pose a risk to the community” but should not be approached by members of the public.

“We have CCTV of him coming into Philip Street and then heading towards Port Road,” superintendent Wall said.

“Our main priority is to apprehend him as soon as possible”.

Burdon is facing charges of illegally possessing ammunition and a firearm without identifying marks on November 2 at Mawson Lakes.

Police also alleged he breached a bail agreement from August.

Burdon is also charged with three counts of serious criminal trespass in a place of residence, five counts of dishonestly taking property, deceiving another to benefit himself, driving a motor vehicle without consent, dishonestly dealing with property and a further two counts of breaching bail.

Those offences are alleged to have occurred in Newton on September 26.

It is those offences for he is believed to have been custody before his escape.

A Department of Correctional Services spokeswoman said the remand centre was “secure” and all other prisoners had been accounted for.

Burdon is described as about 165cm tall, with a medium build and light brown hair.

He was wearing a navy blue T-shirt, navy blue shorts, dark socks and work boots at the time of his escape.

It is the first escape from the Adelaide Remand Centre in the facility’s history, according to Public Service Association general secretary Neville Kitchin

Mr Kitchin said the government should “tear up” its contract with the private security firm tasked with operating the centre.

“We did not see a single escape from the ARC while it was in public hands,” he said.

“There hasn’t been an escape from the Remand Centre in two decades of public administration – yet here we are just 12 months into privatisation and we now have an escape from a high security prison.”

The Adelaide Remand Centre is a maximum-security prison facility used to hold prisoners awaiting trial.
