Police reveal chain of events that led to tragic fatal crash on Arnhem Highway

A woman who was killed in a horrific three-vehicle crash in Darwin’s rural area yesterday ended up smashing into oncoming traffic after her car was struck from behind, according to police.

A 58-year-old driver who was killed in a horrific three-vehicle crash in Humpty Doo yesterday ended up smashing into oncoming traffic after her car was struck from behind, according to police.

Police said the 58-year-old woman was driving a Ford Focus sedan travelling outbound on the Arnhem Highway and was preparing to turn right into a driveway when a Toyota HiLux utility collided with her vehicle from behind just before 1.30pm on Saturday.

As a result of the collision, the woman’s Ford Focus sedan entered the oncoming lane where the vehicle was struck by a Holden Commodore sedan.

Nearby witnesses came to the aid, commencing CPR on the 58-year-old woman driving the Ford Focus sedan however, she was later declared deceased at the scene by paramedics.

The 49-year-old woman driving the utility was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital suffering minor injuries.

The driver of the Holden Commodore, an 18-year-old man, was treated at the scene by paramedics with no serious injuries.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Corey Borton said a crime scene was declared and the section of the highway was closed for several hours while Major Crash detectives investigated the circumstances of the crash.

“Police would like to speak with anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has dashcam footage,” he said.
