A MAN has been arrested for allegedly smashing up five cars in Darwin City overnight.

An NT Police spokeswoman said about 1.10am an agitated 22-year-old man was arrested along Doctors Gully Rd where he allegedly smashed the windows and windscreens of five parked cars.

He was taken into custody and later charged with criminal damage.

A witness, who lives in one of the apartment buildings nearby, said she was woken up by screaming and loud bangs.

“A man was ripping branches off trees and using them to smash up cars on the street,” she said.

“Many people were standing on their balconies watching and one man called out ‘oi’ in an attempt to stop him but it was only when police arrived and handcuffed him that he stopped.

“Signs have since appeared in our lifts asking if anyone has a spare carspace they’d be willing to rent out.”

An NT Police spokeswoman said the man was released with bail conditions and was scheduled to appear in his local court on July 28.
