Parts of the Stuart Highway south of the NT could be closed for up to a week after the road was left damaged in a horrific crash on Saturday.

A B-double truck and a Ford ute crashed and caught fire between Pimba and Glendambo in SA’s far north, killing a 23-year-old man and a 57-year-old woman.

The crash reported catastrophic damage to a bridge on the Stuart Highway and plastic supports under the bridge melted when a large fire started.

Police said the highway would remain closed to all traffic in both directions until the road surface was repaired.

A Woolworths spokesman from said due to the road closure, some deliveries of fruit and vegetables to NT stores had been delayed.

“Our team is working to ensure they arrive as soon as possible, with stock levels expected to return to normal by Wednesday (tomorrow),” he said.

As Coles supermarkets in the NT are serviced by rail freight, they don’t anticipate any availability issues.
