ARMED police could be prevented from entering Indigenous communities and homes without agreement from community elders under a new policy proposed by the NT Greens.

Greens candidate for Braitling Peltherre Chris Tomlins revealed the policy plans today.

“We want reforms to the criminal justice system which would prevent armed police from entering houses and communities of Indigenous people without agreement from community elders.”

NT Police Association president Paul McCue slammed the policy proposal.

Mr Tomlins is also calling for an in-town refuge, open 24/7 and to offer kids temporary accommodation and cultural programs to connect them with country.

“We want the future NT government, local government and local Indigenous organisations to get behind initiatives like Children’s Ground, Casse and community arts projects like the Bonnet Series and so create ways to engage young people in skillsharing programs in local and regional communities,” he said.
