Man hospitalised after being hit by car on Stuart Hwy in Darwin

A man has been hospitalised after being hit by a car on a Darwin highway, in one of three separate road incidents attended by emergency services late yesterday.

A MAN is receiving treatment in hospital after being hit by a car on Stuart Hwy in Darwin yesterday afternoon.

NT Police Northern Watch Commander Richard Howie said the incident was one of three separate crashes that kept emergency services busy and caused congestion on the roads from 4.30pm to 5.15pm.

He said the man had been hit on the highway near Berrimah.

“There was a road train that narrowly missed him and as the road train was avoiding him he was then clipped by another vehicle, so he was extremely lucky,” he said.

“It sounds like the injuries are not too bad.

“He was conveyed to the Royal Darwin Hospital and he’s still getting treatment.”

Cdr Howie said the other incidents yesterday were a four-car crash in Ludmilla at the Bagot Rd and Stuart Hwy intersection and a rear-ender two car crash.

“A vehicle has braked suddenly and caused a bit of a chain reaction so three other vehicles have been involved in a pileup,” he said.

“Soon after we had a taxi and a motorcycle have a collision just near there on Bagot Rd, where I think the motorcycle ran into the rear of the taxi.

“We’re wanting people to take really good care when they’re either driving on or crossing the roads because if they’re not being attentive, it can be quite dangerous.”
