NT Police Northern Watch Commander Len Turner said the man had been arrested over the incident and was in custody.
“At 11pm police were called to report of a man assaulting a female in Casuarina,” he said.
“CCTV operators were watching the assault. What was disturbing was the assault was quite violent in nature and these parties are not known, it appears the man has stolen a mobile phone.”
Commander Turner said the assault had briefly stopped traffic, given it took place on a pedestrian crossing on Bradshaw Tce, behind Casuarina.
“While it was happening two vehicles were stopped,” he said.
“We’d like to speak to those drivers and assist us in our investigations.”
