‘It makes me feel unsure about how I’m going to get my life sorted’: Pregnant woman’s stolen car used in Palmerston crime spree

A crime spree has left shop owners and residents devastated, including heavily pregnant Laura Rees whose new car was stolen and used in a ram raid.

A CRIME spree through Palmerston has left shop owners and residents devastated, including heavily pregnant Laura Rees whose new car was stolen and used to ram raid a liquor store.

The soon to be single mum should be preparing to have her baby but has been forced to figure out how she’s going to drive herself and newborn around after her car was stolen and used to ram raid Cellarbrations in Zuccoli.

At 12.30am Wednesday morning, Ms Rees woke to her dogs barking and went into the living room to find her doors wide open and car missing.

“Pretty devastated, I mean the fact is I could have this baby any week,” she said.

“There’s no hire cars in Darwin so I can’t get a hire car.

“It makes me feel unsure about how I’m going to get my life sorted, it’s bad timing, not that there’s any good timing when it comes to this sort of thing.”

To make matters worse, a 1.8m Colorbond fence was supposed to have been installed on Tuesday.

Police are searching for her blue 2020 KIA Seltos, which was used to ram raid several businesses in Darwin, including Shelly Lay’s Cellarbrations liquor store attached to the Zuccoli IGA.

Hungry Jacks and Incredible India at Rosebery were also targeted in the spree.

Ms Lay, her husband and staff spent the day cleaning up shattered glass and destroyed booze.

She estimates damages to be cost them tens of thousands of dollars.

“It’s just devastating to see your shop like that, so badly damaged,” Ms Lay said.

“The damage is so severe compared to what was taken, that’s the sad part.”

Ms Lay thanked the community for their support and her staff for their efforts in helping. NT Police’s Strike Force Trident unit are searching for two people involved in the theft of the car and crime spree through Palmerston.

Strike Force Trident Officer in Charge Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Bland said officers were unable to determine the gender of the two people involved as their faces were covered by masks. He said he understood how frustrating the senseless crime was for the victims.

“It makes us more determined to try and apprehend these criminals,” Sgt Bland said.
