NT POLICE has warned protesters planning to attend a Black Lives Matter protests in Alice Springs on Saturday to not engage in violence.

A Black Lives Matter vigil is set to take place in Alice Springs on Saturday at 2pm on the town’s courthouse lawns.

“This protest is in solidarity with the US protesters, as well as shedding light on police brutality in Australia and Aboriginal deaths in custody,” an event flyer says.

Alice Springs Superintendent Brett Prowse said while police respected the right for people to protest, they asked those who did to do it in a peaceful, respectful, and lawful manner.

“There are still COVID-19 health directions from the Chief Health Officer in place, so we ask that people continue to adhere to those directions for the safety of themselves and others,” he said.

“A minimum space of 1.5 metres between people who aren’t immediate family members is still required.”

Thousands of people are expected to attend marches to protest against police brutality in major cities across the nation this weekend.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has asked people not to participate in the protests amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“Let’s find a better way and another way to express these sentiments, rather than putting your own health at risk,” he said.

NT’s Chief Minister Michael Gunner also urged people to refrain from gathering in large numbers this weekend, including at protests.

“It’s an important issue and an important point to be made, but not by compromising the safety of Territorians,” he said.

“I’m asking people to exercise their judgment. Practice social distancing, do not gather in large numbers. Stay smart and stay safe.”

NT Senator Malarndirri McCarthy said the deep anguish felt after the death of American George Floyd was something indigenous communities understand all too well.

“The death of George Floyd is felt here by First Nations people,” she said.

“We only have to look at deaths in custody on Palm Island in Queensland and Kumanjayi Walker in Yuendumu in the NT last year to know that these feelings are very real and very raw.”
