THE Liquor Commission has proposed to tighten the sale of alcohol in the Barkly region in a bid to tackle problem drinking and alcohol-fuelled violence.

Under the proposal three venues — the Tennant Creek Hotel, the Goldfields Hotel and the Elliott Hotel — would be required to check the ID of patrons who chose to drink onsite.

Another proposal would see the selling of takeaway liquor capped to three purchases a day for a residence, regardless of who bought the alcohol.

The Liquor Commission’s proposal, which was released last week, has come under fire from the Barkly Regional Council which claims “the consultation process and the outcome of the proposal to be less than adequate to service the needs of the Barkly”.

The council claims there was little consultation, the report used emotive language, and the suggestions were a “Band-Aid solution”.

“The restrictions themselves are a Band-Aid solution and does nothing to address the root causes of alcohol abuse in the community, such as lack of social infrastructure, economic and psycho/socio factors,” the council said.

The proposal also requires all liquor licensees to install CCTV to capture the sale of liquor, the use of the ID scanner for the Banned Drinker Register and the purchaser’s and seller’s face.

Liquor retailers will also be prevented from selling booze to someone when a Police Alcohol Liquor Inspector or a Point of Sale Intervention police officer is present, until they have checked the person’s credentials and given the OK.

Affected licensees have 28 days to respond to the proposal.

The Liquor Commission, if there is strong support, is open to hold a public hearing in Tennant Creek in February.
