Police charge 45-year-old man in a West Arnhem community for allegedly carrying child abuse materials

A 45-year-old man from a remote Territory community has been charged for allegedly accessing child abuse material.

POLICE have charged a 45-year-old man for an allegedly accessing child abuse material in a West Arnhem community.

NT Police Joint Anti-Child Exploitation Team detectives conducted a search warrant on the man’s home on Monday afternoon and located a mobile phone that contained child abuse material.

He has been charged with six counts of transmit child abuse material and one count each of possess or control child abuse material and access child abuse material.

The man was on remand and was scheduled to appear in Darwin Local Court on Wednesday.

Detective Sergeant Mark Cronin strongly condemned child abuse in all its forms and said anyone who viewed child abuse material was committing a crime.

“Members of the public who have any information about people involved in child abuse and exploitation are urged to call police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000,” Sergeant Cronin said.

Teen suspected of assault

POLICE are calling for help to find a teenager suspected of assaulting two women at a Casuarina Square carpark.

The incidents occurred on Friday afternoon and police say could involve one victim who does not know she was assaulted.

Police allege in the first incident, a woman was loading shopping into her car at about 5pm when she was approached from behind and indecently assaulted.

The offender left after the victim yelled and the attack was reported to police.

While investigating that incident, police reviewed CCTV vision which showed a youth matching the earlier description allegedly sexually assaulting an unconscious woman in the shopping centre loading bay.

The incident happened around 5.20pm on Friday, a short-time after the initial incident.

Police say the woman appeared to remain unconscious during the ordeal and may not be aware she was assaulted.

The teen is described as an Aboriginal male with long curly hair. At the time, he was wearing a black cap, black T-shirt, white shorts and black shoes.

Detective A/Superintendent Justin Bentley appealed to the public for further information.

“This youth appeared to be acting spontaneously and we encourage all shoppers to be aware of their surroundings and to report any suspicious activity to police or centre security,” he said.

“The public has a right to feel safe and to be able to go about their business.”

Casuarina Square has undergone a change of management in recent months and security has been significantly beefed up, including uniformed guards patrolling the shopping centre with security dogs.

Man stabbed in CBD

A WOMAN is in custody after allegedly stabbing a man in a Darwin city park on Saturday night.

NT Police said the attack took place at about 11pm at Bennett Park on the corner of Mitchell and Bennett streets.

Police say a woman in her 30s allegedly used an edged weapon to attack a male in his 40s. They say the couple were known to each other.

A/Sgt Sally Nicholas said paramedics treated the man at the scene before taking him to Royal Darwin Hospital.

“Paramedics transported the 49-year-old man to Royal Darwin Hospital. He has since undergone surgery and is assisting police with the investigation.”.

A 34-year-old woman arrested at the scene has been charged with one count of unlawfully cause serious harm. She has been remanded in custody to appear at Darwin Local Court on Monday.
