All three Tennant Creek escapees have been arrested

Police have located and arrested all three prisoners who escaped from Barkly Work Camp after a five-day search.

UPDATE: THE third prisonerwho escaped from a Tennant Creek work camp has been located and arrested.

After a five-day search, 23 year old Ezra Austral was arrested in the township on Thursday night, police announced around 9.40pm.

He joins the two other escapees who were apprehended earlier in the night.

EARLIER: TWO of the three prisoners who escaped from the Barkly Work Camp on January 15 have been arrested by NT Police.

Police have confirmed that Maximus Cutta, 20, and Richard Henwood, 37 were located and arrested in Tennant Creek on Thursday afternoon.

The third escapee Ezra Austral, 23, remains outstanding.

The three escapees were believed to have removed their electronic monitoring devices before stealing a 1996 Nissan Navara two-door trayback ute with the registration CD95HC.

Police continue to call for further information in relation to Ezra’s whereabouts.

Man arrested after bizarre alleged aggravated robbery

POLICE have arrested a man for his alleged role in a bizarre aggravated robbery in the Darwin CBD at the weekend.

An NT Police spokeswoman said two men had approached a driver in his 40s while he was stopped at a traffic light at about 11pm on Saturday night.

She said the trio then drove around town for some time before parking on Smith St where the two men got out of the vehicle, taking a bag of alcohol belonging to the driver with them.

When confronted, the two men allegedly assaulted the other man and left him on the ground while they drove off in his car.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Bland said the alleged offenders found a credit card in the car which was later used 15 times and the vehicle was also allegedly involved in a fuel drive-off.

“Police located the vehicle abandoned in bushland in Driver on Sunday,” he said.

“A number of people were seen running from the location.”

Sgt Bland said an operation involving Strike Force Trident, general duties police and the dog squad led officers to one alleged offender, who was found hiding in the scrub by patrol dog Drax.

The 24-year-old man is now in custody and investigators expect to charge him with aggravated robbery, obtaining benefit by deception and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

Investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend the man’s alleged co-offenders.

Woman charged after allegedly biting security guard

POLICE have charged a woman with aggravated assault after she allegedly bit a security guard on the chest while being escorted out of a licenced venue at the weekend.

Investigators say the 31-year-old was in breach of a chief health officer’s direction when she attended the venue on Saturday night and was asked to leave due to “disorderly behaviour”.

Police were called and charged her with assaulting a worker and returning to a licenced premises after being kicked out and issued her with an infringement notice when the alleged CHO breach came to light.

The woman was bailed to appear before the Darwin Local Court on February 22.

Top End gardener loses fingers to lawnmower

A GARDENER was forced to pick up his own fingers after losing a battle with a running lawnmower.

St John Ambulance NT Operations Manager Craig Garraway said paramedics were called to a Virginia home on Sunday afternoon following reports of a 46-year-old man injured in a gardening incident.

“A number of fingers has been amputated as a result of an encounter with a lawnmower,” Mr Garraway told the ABC.

Mr Garraway said the gardener’s green thumb may have to rest for a bit as he recovered in Royal Darwin Hospital.

“He’ll need a bit of surgery to try and sort those fingers out for him,” he said.

“(He would be a) bit sore and sorry for himself today.”

Mr Garraway said the gory gardening incident was a valuable lesson to anyone handling a lawnmower.

“I think its that moment when you put your hand in there are go ‘what was I thinking?’,” he said.

“And then you pick the fingers up.”

“I’ve nearly been there a couple times.”

Swerving driver allegedly busted nearly five times legal limit

AN ALICE Springs man was allegedly busted with nearly five times the legal limit of booze sloshing in his system while behind the wheel.

Southern Watch Commander Alistair Gall said the 35-year-old driver was spotted swerving across the road at Scott Terrace, East Side at 2.30am Monday.

Mr Gall alleged the driver hit the kerb, but continued going until police managed to pull him over.

It will be alleged he blew a blood alcohol reading of 0.2257.

He was arrested and will face Alice Springs Local Court on Monday.

But Mr Gall said it was a relatively quiet night for officers.

“There was a fair bit of rain so things tend to calm down a bit,” he said.

Police hunt for three men after escaping from Barkly Work Camp in Tennant Creek

UPDATED: Three men escaped from custody in the Barkly Work Camp in Tennant Creek overnight.

Police are asking the public to be on the lookout for Ezra Austral, 23, Richard Henwood, 37, and Maximus Cutta, 20, after they left the facility around 11.30pm on Saturday night.

They are believed to have removed their electronic monitoring devices before stealing a 1996 Nissan Navara two-door trayback ute with the registration CD95HC.

They were all wearing prison-issued clothing – blue shorts with one wearing a green shirt and the other two in yellow.

Anyone who comes across the men are advised not to approach them and call police on 131 444.

Tennant Creek home destroyed by blaze

A home in Tennant Creek was engulfed by flames and left completely destroyed on Saturday morning.

NT police reports said firefighters were dispatched to the scene on Haddock st about 11.40am before arriving in under eight minutes to find the inferno.

The fire was brought under control just after midday.

Firefighters undertook an internal search of the property and fortunately did not locate any occupants.

The single-storey residence was completely destroyed by the fire.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.

Remote crash

TWO men have been flown to Darwin in a serious condition after a crash at the Katherine Cattleyard Florina Rd, 10km from Katherine.

NT Police have launched an investigation to assess whether speed and alcohol played a role in the crash.

The incident unfolded at 7.40pm Friday after a red Toyota Prado crashed into the back of a three-trailer road train.

The Prado sustained extensive damage, with police and fire crews needing to remove both occupants from the vehicle.

A 66-year-old man, the driver, and his 61-year-old passenger were taken to Katherine District Hospital in a serious condition, with multiple fractures to their chest and legs.

An NT Police spokesman said the pair were being prepared for transport to Darwin by Care Flight.

The spokesman said Florina Rd was closed for four hours while investigations were undertaken.

He said speed and alcohol were believed to be contributing factors to the crash.

Man charged for robbery

A MAN was charged on Friday afternoon after the aggravated robbery of a shopping centre employee in Palmerston earlier this week.

Police were first alerted to the situation at Temple Tce at 7.30am Tuesday.

Police allege the 37-year-old man assaulted the employee with an edged weapon after stealing an item from a shopping centre.

The employee sustained minor injuries.

Serious Crime detectives charged the man on Friday with aggravated robbery, and he is expected to face court at a later date.

Man stranded in outback without water found

AUTHORITIES say a 52-year-old man who became lost in harsh Central Australian conditions has been found alive, but severely dehydrated.

The man alerted the Joint Emergency Services Call Centre on Thursday morning that he had run out of water and was walking back to Kintore.

Officers later found his vehicle and footprints approximately 50km west of the town.

Conditions in the region were treacherous, with the mercury hitting 42C.

NT Police said in a statement he had been located under a tree approximately 10km west of Kintore on Thursday afternoon.

Just before 7am on Thursday, officers in the Joint Emergency Services Call Centre received a call from a man saying he’d run out of water and was walking back to Kintore.

They said the man was severely dehydrated, having not had any water for several hours and been exposed to severe heat throughout the day.

He was taken to the Kintore clinic for assessment before being rushed to Alice Springs for further medical treatment.

Cops search for youths who allegedly broke into store and stole sports drinks

COPS are searching for a group of youths who allegedly smashed through a window of an Alice Springs business and stole nothing more than a few bottles of Gatorade.

Around 3.20am NT Police responded to a break-in at business premises on Parsons St in the CBD, where a glass door had been kicked down.

“They ran off and were captured on CCTV,” Southern Watch Commander Jared Thompson said.

“So we’ll be following up today and hopefully have the (alleged) offender by the end of today, if not earlier.”

Commander Thompson said police believed three youths were involved.

“The damage done to get into the premises was worth way more than the property stolen,” he said.

Missing teen found

MISSING teenager Gloria Minyagu has been located safe and well.

NT Police thanked the public for their assistance in helping to locate her.

On Thursday, police appealed for help to find the teenage girl who went missing after a shift working at a fast food outlet on Tuesday.

The 16-year-old had last been seen at about 7pm on Tuesday after clocking off from work at the Palmerston takeaway shop.

EARLIER: Her family say she failed to return home that evening and reported their concerns to police early on Thursday morning after they were unable to find her themselves.

Gloria was last seen wearing green and black gym clothes and was carrying her work shirt in her bag.

She is of average height and build with a dark complexion, dark curly hair and pierced ears.

Alleged robber charged

ONE out of two men who allegedly robbed a Darwin CBD business on Tuesday afternoon has been charged with aggravated robbery by detectives from Serious Crime.

NT Police reported the 19-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday after he allegedly threatened a staff member of the Cavanagh st business with a blunt weapon before fleeing the scene with alcohol.

He was remanded to appear in Darwin Local Court on Thursday.

Detective senior sergeant Brett Cottier said there was no room in the community for “this kind of behaviour”.

“We have one outstanding offender for this incident and detectives are currently searching for him,” Sgt Cottier said.

Man accused of vehicle ramming arrested

A MAN who allegedly drove a vehicle into a group of people in Central Australia, causing “significant injuries” to two men has been arrested and charged with a string of offences.

An NT Police spokesman said officers had responded to a “large disturbance” between two groups of people in the remote community of Nyirripi on Tuesday when the incident happened.

He said during the disturbance, the 22-year-old man allegedly rammed the two other men, aged 18 and 24, before they were flown to Alice Springs Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver allegedly fled the scene but police found and arrested him on Thursday, charging him with dangerous driving causing serious harm, recklessly endangering serious harm and hit and run.

He was due to face the Alice Springs Local Court on Monday.

Meanwhile, a 28-year-old woman who was allegedly struck in the head with an edged weapon during the disturbance was treated at the local clinic for non-life-threatening injuries.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident to identify the woman’s attacker.
