Woman allegedly assaulted while holding toddler in Karama

Police have revealed details of an alleged horrific domestic violence incident, which resulted in a woman being rendered unconscious.

Australia's domestic violence crisis

A woman holding her toddler fell to the ground and was rendered unconscious in an alleged domestic violence incident in Darwin.

An NT Police statement said in the early hours of October 15, the victim was holding her two-year-old when her partner, 28, allegedly assaulted her in Karama.

The victim fell to the ground and lost consciousness.

Police allege the man continued to assault the woman before a witness intervened.

The woman regained consciousness, took the child inside a home and called emergency services.

The pair were taken to Royal Darwin Hospital and later released with non-life threatening injuries.

The man was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated assault and one count each of driving unlicensed, unregistered, an uninsured vehicle and under the influence of alcohol.

Sergeant Caragh Hen urged anyone aware of domestic violence incidents to contact police.

“This is despicable behaviour that the victim and her child have had to endure,” she said.

“Police have a zero tolerance approach and continue to investigate and prosecute members of the community who act in this way.”
