Marine Rescue: Joint police effort needed to rescue group of four stranded while island fishing

A joint police effort was needed to rescue a group of four people who found themselves stranded without food or fuel.

A JOINT police effort was needed to rescue a group of four fishos who found themselves stranded without food or fuel.

At 3.30pm on Thursday police were advised that the four people had departed in a 3.9m vessel from the Lake Evella barge with the intention of fishing in the vicinity of a nearby island.

Despite limited mobile coverage they were able to make contact with a family member advising they had run out of fuel.

They later revealed that they also had no food, water or safety gear on-board.

A joint police effort from police at Lake Evella, Galiwinku and the Water Police section were able to locate and return the stranded party in good health just after 9pm.

Police are conducting further investigations into the matter and will determine what action will be taken in relation to the identified offending.

The incident, coinciding with National Safe Boating Week, comes as a reminder to ensure people are prepared before setting out.

Two Darwin ambos assaulted on the job in separate incidents

TWO St John NT paramedics have been assaulted on the job in separate incidents in the past 24 hours in Darwin.

A St John NT paramedic was assaulted while providing a 44-year-old male first aid and the other incident occurred while paramedics were refilling the ambulance.

Acting Senior Sergeant Michael Fields said the first paramedic was punched in the upper leg while providing treatment on Parap Rd in Parap.

“The male party was arrested at the scene and has had his bail refused,” Sen Sgt Fields said.

“He will face the Darwin Local Court later today on an ‘assault a worker’ charge.

“The paramedic did not require any further treatment.”

St John’s Ambulance Operations Manager Craig Garraway said two other paramedics were involved in an incident in Casuarina while refilling the ambulance.

“One of the people there unfortunately assaulted one of the paramedics,” Mr Garraway said.

“Police got involved and are dealing with that matter as well. So, very disappointing.”

Mr Garraway said the two paramedics were ‘doing fine’ but should not have to tolerate this kind of behaviour.

“Unfortunately it is becoming quite common and I hate using this term but (paramedics) apparently are becoming ‘used to it’,” he said.

“Which is totally inappropriate, but (it) happens quite regularly and I suppose they just get used to this type of behaviour. But we need to stop it.

“Very frustrated and very disappointed.”

NT Police have warned that assaults against any person, especially emergency services workers, will not be tolerated.

The ‘assault a worker’ charge carries a maximum penalty of up to seven years imprisonment.
