Gapuwiyak home engulfed in flames, police investigate cause

NT Police are investigating the cause of a blaze that engulfed a family home in flames.

A spokesperson said the structure fire in Gapuwiyak was reported about 9.30pm Wednesday.

They said officers tried to contain the flames using a “small tank fire trailer” but the blaze spread and caused “significant damage to the residence”.

The spokesperson said the home’s occupants self-evacuated.

They said a woman in her 60s needed medical treatment for minor injuries to her face.

Armed robbery foiled by home’s occupants

Police are hunting for three people who tried to rob a Katherine home with an edged weapon.

An NT Police spokesperson said the trio of men entered a Lucy St home about 10.50pm Wednesday.

The spokesperson said the home’s occupants confronted the would-be burglars but were assaulted when the group fled.

They said the trio dropped the items they had been carrying while fleeing.

The spokesperson called on anyone with information to contact police on 131 444.

Road crash disrupts major Top End road

July 17: Drivers faced minor traffic disruptions after two cars collided on a major Top End road.

The crash took place on the intersection of Tiger Brennan Drive and Gonzales Road at 11.53am on Wednesday.

Police said the incident was not a fatal crash, and there were currently no serious injuries.

One car was described as having its front crumpled in and was inoperable following the incident.

Police and emergency services were on the scene removing the debris from the main road.

It comes after a fatal incident in Berry Springs on Tuesday, in what has been a horror year on Territory roads.

The road toll now stands at 35.
