WARNING: GRAPHIC: Ute runs down man in Darwin

UPDATED: Two family groups were involved in a shocking incident caught on video, where a man was run down in a stolen ute on Saturday in Darwin, NT Police say.

Police said the incident was linked to a series of previous violent altercations between the two families.

Initial police investigations indicate the two family groups were involved in a physical altercation where sticks and an axe were used, resulting in injuries to an unknown number of people.

One family group was then alleged to have driven a stolen ute at the other group in the early hours of Saturday morning outside the Quality Inn near the Darwin airport.

The horrifying video shows the 4WD drive at speed into the hotel driveway, slamming into one of the men and carrying him along for a number of metres before he falls to the ground.

.

Amazingly, that person was able to get to his feet, and then fled the scene.

Detective Senior Sergeant Brett Cottier said the stolen ute was driving in an erratic manner and was a serious risk to other road users.

“The incident appears to have rolled from one scene to the next, with police identifying two more people with injuries suffered from earlier altercations and a trail of destruction caused by the stolen vehicle damaging a hotel, the front of a business and a number of objects in the front carpark,” said Det S/Sgt Cottier.

“Detectives from Crime Command have been investigating this incident since the early hours of Saturday morning and have continued their inquiries throughout the weekend.

“It’s thanks to the quick response of the traffic unit intervening that has ensured no one was seriously injured or killed.”

A number of persons of interest have been identified by police, and investigations continue.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information which would assist with investigations is urged to contact police on 131 222 or report it via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 and reference PROMIS 10036477.

EARLIER, SATURDAY: SHOCKING video shared on social media shows the moment a man is mowed down by a 4WD in the driveway of a Darwin hotel.

In the video, the ute is seen being driven erratically and appearing to chase a group of people outside the Quality Inn near the Darwin airport in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The ute is filmed speeding down the street following the group of men, before narrowly missing them.

The driver then slams on the brakes and swerves around them, causing them to scatter out of the way, the video shared on Facebook and Reddit on Saturday reveals.

The men scream and throw their hands in anger while a witness is heard yelling: “Call the police now.”

The ute driver appears to taunt the men from a distance, moving back and forth in a threatening manner. Onlookers can be heard yelling: “Get out” and “What’s wrong with you mob?”

The ute then drives at speed into the hotel driveway, slamming into one of the men and carrying him along for a number of metres before he falls to the ground.

Amazingly, the man gets up and the ute speeds away, mounting a garden bed before fleeing as a police car arrives with flashing lights.

The vision appeared to show the cop car driving away in the opposite direction to the fleeing ute.

It is unclear from the video if the police in the car had seen the ute – or the man who had been struck.

As the ute driver heads back in the other direction and over a median strip, the police car is seen driving past it and away down McMillans Rd as the 4WD escapes in the opposite direction.
