A senior NT police officer will fight allegations she trespassed into a Darwin home, before assaulting and threatening to kill a resident inside.

NT Water Police Officer in Charge Senior Sergeant Sandi Mellon was issued a notice to appear in January but her lawyer Ray Murphy told Darwin Local Court she was interstate and her personal appearance was excused.

Police have alleged Mrs Mellon trespassed and unlawfully entered a Darwin home, assaulted a person and threatened to kill them on August 26.

The 46-year-old was also charged with disorderly behaviour and it will be alleged her obscene language was loud enough to be heard from the street.

The alleged incident occurred the day after her husband, and then-NT Police officer, was arrested while walking into a Darwin station for work.

In an unrelated matter, then-acting Senior Sergeant Neil Mellon was charged in relation to the fatal helicopter crash in West Arnhem last February that killed Outback Wrangler cast member Chris ‘Willow’ Wilson.

The 47-year-old former cop faced 32 charges, including attempting to pervert the course of justice, destroying evidence and making a false declaration, as well as a range of firearm and wildlife charges.

It is not alleged Mrs Mellon’s charges are related to her husband’s case.

She faces five charges, including unlawfully entering a home, trespass, assault, making threats to kill and disorderly behaviour in the view of the public.

Mr Murphy told the court the charges were contested, asking for a hearing to resolve disputes over the alleged facts.

Judge John Neill adjourned the hearing until April 3 for a directions hearing, with Mrs Mellon not required to attend if legally represented.

“Hopefully we can have it resolved before then,” Mr Murphy said,

When she was charged in January NT Police confirmed Mrs Mellon remained a serving officer, but would not clarify if she was still in her regular duties.

The NT ICAC and the NT Ombudsman are aware of the investigation into the serving officer.
