Police have arrested and charged a man following an alleged fatal hit and run.

Alice Springs hit and run witnesses urged to come forward

A 64-YEAR-OLD man has been charged over an alleged hit and run after handing himself in to police.

On May 24 around 9.50pm police received reports a woman, 25, found unconscious on Gap Rd in Alice Springs, near the intersection with Kempe St.

She was taken to the Alice Springs Hospital but later died from her injuries.

In the days following, NT Police made calls for information and CCTV footage.

A statement from NT Police says detectives from the Alice Springs Criminal Investigation Branch and Major Crash Investigation Unit travelled to a remote community on Friday night, before the man handed himself in.

He was charged with one count of hit and run and will appear in court at a later date.

“Police would like to thank the public who greatly assisted in supplying vital CCTV footage and information that led to the successful identification and arrest of the man,” the statement said.

UPDATE 4PM, THURS MAY 26: FOUR people may have witnessed a horrific hit and run which claimed the life of a young woman in Alice Springs.

NT Police are calling for the driver and the passengers in a VE Holden Commodore to come forward as they may have information to solve a mystery surrounding a fatal crash.

Police are investigating the death of a 25-year-old woman, who was found unconscious on Gap Rd near the intersection with Kempe St about 9.45pm on Tuesday.

The woman was taken to hospital where she later passed away.

Her partner, Jonah Multa faced the Alice Springs Local Court on Thursday charged with beating the 25-year-old only moments before she stepped out onto the busy road.

Multa appeared before Judge Sarah McNamara charged with aggravated assault, breach of a domestic violence order, possessing an offensive weapon and intoxicated driving.

Police said Multa was arrested at the scene but it is not alleged he was involved in the fatal hit and run.

Multa was remanded in custody, and will return to court on July 21 for a preliminary examination mention.

Investigators continue to search for the unknown driver and have released footage of a group of people who may have answers to this mystery.

NT Police released footage of a VE Holden Commodore captured five minutes after the alleged hit and run.

The CCTV cameras captured the Commodore pulling up outside Alice Fashion, on Gregory Tce.

The driver, a person in a large pale akubra stepped out of the car, followed by two passengers.

The footage appeared to show another person approaching the vehicle, before all four got back in the car and drove off.

Police believe those in the car can assist in their investigation and have called for them to come forward.

UPDATE 2PM, THURS MAY 26: A YOUNG woman was allegedly beaten by her partner only moments before she stepped out onto a busy Alice Springs road.

NT Police have revealed the alleged lead up to the fatal hit-and-run, which claimed the life of a 25-year-old Central Australian woman.

Police have confirmed a 29-year-old man was arrested soon after his partner was found unconscious on the road after being hit by a car at Alice Springs.

It will be alleged the man assaulted the 25-year-old woman only a short time before she was hit by an unknown driver at 9.45pm, Tuesday.

The woman was found seriously injured on Gap Rd near the intersection with Kempe St.

First responders performed first aid, and she was taken to hospital, where she later passed away from her injuries.

The 29-year-old was arrested at the scene.

It is not alleged the man was involved in the alleged fatal hit and run.

He was charged with aggravated assault, breach of a domestic violence order, possessing an offensive weapon and intoxicated driving.

The 29-year-old was due to appear in Alice Local Court on Thursday.

Police continue to search for the driver and anyone who has any information about the hit and run.

UPDATE 8.30AM, THURS MAY 26: POLICE have released CCTV of a car they believe was in the area at the time of a fatal hit and run in Alice Springs.

INITIAL 10AM, WED MAY 25: A WOMAN died in hospital on Tuesday night after she was hit by a car on a Central Australian road.

The 25-year-old was found unconscious on Gap Rd near the intersection with Kempe St just before 10pm on Tuesday.

Police are calling for information after a silver sedan, possibly a VE Holden Commodore was seen leaving the vicinity of the incident.

Police would like to speak to the driver of the vehicle and urge anyone with information to come forward.

“The Major Crash Unit and Alice Springs CIB are investigating and we are urging anyone in the area at that time who may have seen or heard something to make contact on 131 444,” Detective Senior Sergeant Michael Schumacher said.

St John NT operations manager Craig Garraway said the woman was a pedestrian and was pronounced dead at Alice Springs Hospital.

“She was taken to hospital in a critical condition from that incident but died at hospital,” Mr Garraway said.
