Police are calling for information on a serious collision that resulted in an eight-year-old student suffering critical head injuries.

Major Crash detectives are particularly seeking dashcam footage of a Ford sedan and a bus travelling on Bees Creek Rd on Tuesday afternoon.

The boy was hit by a car after getting off a school bus about 3pm on Tuesday.

Drivers of the bus and the car that struck the child stopped at the scene and have been assisting police with their investigations.

The student remains in a critical but stable condition at Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH).

A spokeswoman from the NT Department of Education said Bees Creek Primary School was offering support to the student.

“We can confirm that a student from Bees Creek Primary School was involved in the accident (on Tuesday),” she said.

“The principal and assistant principal have been in regular contact with the family and are offering support as requested.

“We will continue to support the student and family through this difficult time.

“Support services are being provided to students and their families, and staff members.”

Sergeant Brendan Lindner said police were searching for any witnesses of the accident.

“Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incident to make contact,” Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said.

“Investigators are particularly interested if you have dashcam footage of a blue Ford Falcon sedan or a passenger bus travelling along Bees Creek Rd at the time.

“Please contact police on 131 444 and quote reference number 10194747.”

The accident occurred near the intersection of McAulay Rd.

Emergency teams quickly arrived on the scene and treated the child.

St John NT operations manager Craig Garraway told ABC Radio on Wednesday morning intensive care paramedics put the child into an induced coma at the scene.

“This was a real serious one,” Mr Garraway said.

“He appears to have got off a bus on Bees Creek Road and has run in front of the bus into an oncoming car.

“Obviously a horrible thing for the families involved, including the person that was in that car.”

St John NT took the child to RDH where he remains in a critical condition with serious head injuries.

“He seems to be doing very well in the intensive care unit,” Mr Garraway said.

“He did go into theatre yesterday.

“So all our prayers are with that young boy and family and hope he makes a full recovery.”

Bees Creek Rd was closed between Lovelock Rd and Gulnare Rd as police continued investigations.

The road has since reopened.

The crash comes in a horror year on Northern Territory roads.

In 2022, 48 people have died on Territory roads, which is already more than last year’s total of 35 deaths.
