Alleged court runaway charged with assaulting security guard

A mad dash for freedom has ended with a Darwin Court escapee facing even more time behind bars.

Kyle Campion was sentenced to a year in prison for escaping lawful custody three days after he attempted to flee from his Supreme Court hearing.

The 21-year-old was due to be sentenced by Justice Sonia Brownhill on Tuesday for a knife-wielding robbery at Casuarina car park when he made his bid for freedom.

Court CCTV footage showed Campion shoving a guard, jumping over the dock and running towards the door.

One of the lawyers appeared to try and cut him off, however the 21-year-old had already burst through the double doors of Court 3 before he could be reached.

In the chaos the 21-year-old grabbed a metal water jug, but left behind one of his shoes.

Campion was then filmed trying to break down the door with his shoulder, before using the jug to smash the lock.

CCTV operators were able to track Campion, allowing police to use real-time information to find the 21-year-old within an hour and a half of his escape.

Three days later Campion was sentenced for the escape attempt, as well as a knife-wielding robbery at the Casuarina car park.

For the escape from lawful custody charge, Campion was sentenced to 12 months in prison.

He will serve a total of four years in prison, after also pleading to the Casuarina aggravated robbery and weapon possession, and for assaulting court security workers and damaging property.

Campion has already served a year on remand.
