Kyle Campion accused of fleeing Darwin court and assaulting security guard

A man charged with armed robbery who allegedly absconded from court and is accused of assaulting a security guard that left staff ‘quite rattled’ has been caught. Read how they tracked him down.

Police have arrested a man who allegedly fled the Supreme Court in Darwin before he was due to appear on a charge of armed robbery.

Kyle Campion, 21, was in the court dock and set to appear for submissions before Justice Sonia Brownhill on Tuesday.

It is alleged Campion jumped the dock and fled the courtroom before allegedly assaulting a court precinct security guard.

Once outside the building, it is alleged Campion, who was on remand when he attended court, grabbed a hammer from a ute and ran from the area.

A NT courts spokeswoman said earlier police were informed of the incident.

“We’re all quite rattled,” she said.

Police said they received reports of a man trying to break into vehicles in a Darwin car park just before 9.30am.

Witnesses told police the man allegedly threatened them with a blunt weapon before fleeing.

General duties police officers, traffic members and the Dog Operations Unit were called in to locate Campion before he was arrested on Smith St within an hour of allegedly fleeing court.

CCTV operators, who were live tracking the incident, provided officers on the ground with real-time information to help locate Campion.

Territory Duty Superintendent Tanya Mace said the immediate police response “provided a quick outcome”.

Campion was due to appear for submissions on charges relating to an alleged armed robbery, and stands accused of possessing a knife at the Casuarina car park.

Justice Brownhill had not taken the bench when the alleged incident occurred.
