Six times over the limit, Darwin woman arrested and charged for high-range drink driving

A 35-year-old Darwin woman was arrested and charged overnight for high-range drink driving on Top End roads.

UPDATE, Sunday 9am: A DARWIN woman was caught driving six times over the legal BAC limit on Saturday night after she failed to negotiate a roundabout on Dick Ward Dr and Hazel Crt in Nightcliff.

Northern Watch Commander Neil Mellon said the 35-year-old woman was a repeat offender of high-range drink driving and was also driving unlicensed.

“The driver was subjected to roadside breath test, where the driver returned a positive breath test and arrested for the purpose of breath analyses and taken to Palmerston watchhouse,” Cmmr Mellon said.

“The breath analysis returned a reading of 0.311 grams of alcohol in 210 litres of breath.”

NT driving laws state that you will be over the limit and face a drink-driving penalty if the concentration of alcohol in your blood or breath is 0.05 per cent BAC or above.

The woman was arrested and charged and will appear in Darwin Local Court at a later date.

Man hands himself in following ‘particularly violent’ assault of 50-year-old

TWO males have been arrested following an alleged, “particularly violent” assault of a 50-year-old man in Palmerston in January.

A 25-year-old handed himself into police this week without incident after a Serious Crime investigation tracked him down.

He was charged with causing serious harm and aggravated robbery and will face the Darwin Local Court on February 28.

It comes after a 16-year-old youth was arrested earlier this month following the alleged aggravated robbery on January 21 around 11pm.

He was charged with acts intending to cause serious harm, aggravated robbery and possessing a dangerous drug.

Police believe five offenders were involved – who stole the man’s wallet – with one using a “blunt object” to attack the victim who received serious injuries and was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital.

Detective Senior Sergeant Brett Cottier said it is believed the offenders were known to the victim.

“This incident was a particularly violent assault and investigations are ongoing to identify the three other co-offenders,” Detective Senior Cottier said.

“Two individuals have now been charged in relation to this incident and the Serious Crime Squad will continue to work to ensure everyone involved faces court.”

Investigations are continuing to find the remaining three offenders.

Security cameras, booze, tobacco, bikes and a car stolen in 24-hour period

SECURITY cameras, alcohol, tobacco, bikes, a car and more were stolen from Alice Spring and Tennant Creek in the last 24-hours.

Southern Watch Commander Alan Milner said a home on Brandt Ct in Araluen was broken into via an unsecure rear door and had assorted alcohol and a BMX bike stolen on Wednesday about 6.17pm.

The break-in is still under investigation and “forensic services have been requested”.

Cmmr Milner said a wallet, credit cards and a brown Ford Focus hatchback with a VIC rego YAO884 was stolen from a home in Desert Springs after the offender damaged a bedroom window to steal the keys.

“The car has since been recovered,” he said.

About 2.22am on Thursday, Cmmr Milner said a home on Park Cres in The Gap had tobacco and alcohol stolen after the offender broke in via the back door.

“Forensic services have been requested for that one as well,” he said.

In Tennant Creek, a home on Eldorado Cres had coins and two wireless CCTV cameras stolen after the offender removed a small glass window from a sliding window.

Cmmr Milner urged people to secure their homes “as best as possible” and to always hide their keys.

“There’s no other way of saying it, you’ve gotta hide your keys these days because they will actually smash their way into your residence,” Cmmr Milner said.

EARLIER, TUESDAY: AN Alice Springs man will spend more than a year behind bars over a violent attack on an unknown woman walking home from her swimming lesson.

Jacob Jack, 27, was sentenced at the NT Supreme Court earlier this month after pleading guilty to wrestling with, kicking and biting a 52-year-old woman in an attempt to steal her backpack.

The court heard Jack also chased the victim after she escaped and threw a rock at her, which narrowly missed her.

Around 6.30pm on March 29, 2021, the woman began the 10km walk home from the Alice Springs aquatic centre.

Jack saw the woman walk past the Old Timers Aged Care Centre and began following her along the footpath.

He then accosted her and grabbed her pink Smiggle backpack that she had over one shoulder but the woman held on and told Jack to “let go” of the bag.

While Jack continued to pull at the bag and held onto the victim’s shirt, the woman punched the offender several times in an attempt to break free.

The woman eventually escaped the 27-year-old’s grip and ran south along the Stuart Hwy and called her husband from her phone in distress.

Jack gave chase and when he got within 1.5m of the victim, he threw a rock in her direction.

The offender again wrestled with the victim for an unknown amount of time before managing to take possession of the backpack.

The victim continued to fight back and the offender kicked and hit the victim while they were in the struggle over the bag.

At some point, the offender bit the victim’s left index finger on two occasions.

The victim also kicked and punched Jack, who repeatedly called her a “f**king b*tch” in an aggressive voice.

The woman finally managed to get the backpack away from Jack and used it to shield her face as she escaped.

In sentencing, Justice Stephen Southwood said Jack’s prospects of rehabilitation largely depend upon him obtaining appropriate rehabilitation and maintaining adherence to an appropriate medication regimen.

Jack received a head sentence of two years and three months, suspended after one year and two months.
