He was remanded to appear before Darwin Local Court on Friday.

“We take community safety very seriously and removing unlawful firearms and illicit drugs from the hands of criminals is our priority.”

Officer spat on during arrest

A police officer will undergo tests after allegedly being spat on while arresting a 17-year-old girl for allegedly breaching her bail.

Officers were in the process of arresting the girl Thursday night in Tennant Creek when it is alleged she spat in the face of one of the officers.

As the girl was being placed in the police vehicle, it is allege a second woman approached another officer and punched him in the face.

Police said the 17-year-old girl and the 60-year-old woman were taken to the Tennant Creek station and charged with assault police.

“The officers were required to attend hospital, one for medical treatment for minor cuts and the second for a blood test,” Senior Sergeant Crispin Gargan said.

“No one should have to deal with this as they go about their work.

“We’re here to serve and protect the community and at times it’s members of the community who are hurting our officers.

“It’s completely unacceptable and both can now face court for their actions.”

Driver in stolen Toyota LandCruiser leads police on wild pursuit through rural area

A driver is still at large after sparking a wild police pursuit through the rural area in a stolen vehicle overnight on Monday.

The silver Toyota LandCruiser was stolen from Darwin Airport where the driver smashed through gates around the premises about 1.40am on Monday.

The LandCruiser was spotted a short time after on Hopewell Rd, Berry Springs by Humpty Doo police officers who attempted to apprehend the car.

Police said the driver failed to stop when requested by the officers and a pursuit was initiated.

The chase was quickly terminated due to the safety concerns because of the driver’s erratic behaviour behind the wheel.

Last week, Darwin Airport introduced sweeping measures to end a surge in vehicle thefts in long-term carparks.

It followed the theft of two vehicles early Thursday morning and another the previous day.

The new measures included increased security staff, additional foot patrols, vehicles, guard dogs and increased CCTV.

Airport executive general manager property and terminal Ross Baynes said airport management is “gravely concerned” about the escalation in crime at the airport.

“Darwin International Airport is gravely concerned about the damage and theft of vehicles from the airports’ car park,” he said.

“This vandalism and theft is co-ordinated and brazen.

“Our customers expect their vehicles to be safe while parked at our airport and we are putting in place a number of measures to meet these expectations.”

Members of the public are urged to contact police if they have any information surrounding the missing LandCruiser.

It comes after a woman was robbed outside Casuarina KFC late Sunday evening.

The woman was approached by two men about 8.15pm before one of the males ripped her handbag from her arms.

The two men fled the area and police are now asking for any witnesses to come forward.
