A young man has died after a single-vehicle crash on the Stuart Highway outbound early on Saturday morning.
The 22-year-old was the only one in the car. He died at the scene.
The man was driving a red Holden V6 Commodore.
The Top End road was closed between Tivendale Road/Thorak Road and Lagoon Road until midmorning.
NT Police at the scene said they believed the man was a resident of the area and the “horrific” crash happened about 4am Saturday.
Major Crash Investigators were at the scene of the crash, which was an active crime scene well into the morning.
Detective Senior Sergeant Corey Borton said a report would be prepared for the coroner.
Motorists were advised to avoid the area and be mindful of the changed conditions.
The fatality takes the NT road toll to 37 for 2022, up from 35 for 2021.
This time last year it was 25.
It comes after a horror night on Darwin roads, with emergency services responding to six separate incidents on Friday night.
NT Police said all six involved just minor injuries.
Between 2pm and 11pm, crashes were reported in the suburbs of Bayview, Winnellie, Tiwi, Marrara, East Arm and Pinelands.
There were also another two just outside of Adelaide River overnight.
A spokesman for NT Police said they were investigating the causes but understood alcohol was a factor in at least one of the crashes.
