Truck passenger seriously injured, ute driver confirmed dead in Stuart Hwy crash at Palmerston

A ute driver has died and a truck passenger has been rushed to hospital in a serious condition after a horror car crash in Palmerston.

March 11: Paramedics have confirmed a woman was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital in a serious condition following a horror crash on the Stuart Hwy.

St John NT Territory Response Manager Craig Garraway said the woman was a passenger in a truck that fatally collided with a ute about 9am Sunday.

NT Health has been contacted for comment.

NT Police said the 77-year-old driver of the ute died in the crash.

March 10: NT Police have confirmed the 77-year-old driver of a utility vehicle has lost his life after a horror two-vehicle collision on the Stuart Highway at Palmerston.

The incident, understood to have also involved a small, Hino-style flatbed truck, occurred just after 9am Sunday at the intersection of the Stuart Hwy and Lambrick Ave at Bakewell.

St John Ambulance, NT Fire and Rescue and NT Police personnel attended the scene and found a 77-year-old male trapped in the utility, police said in a statement issued just before 3pm.

The man’s condition worsened at the scene and CPR was commenced once he was extracted from the utility.

The driver was unable to be revived and he was declared deceased at 9.35am.

No information was available as to the condition of the truck driver, nor whether either vehicle contained passengers.

Traffic on the Stuart Highway continues to be diverted at Temple Tce onto Roystonea Ave, which is expected to continue until late Sunday afternoon.

The public is urged to avoid the area if possible.

Detectives are urging anyone who witnesses the crash, or if you have dashcam footage of the incident to call police on 131 444 and quote number P24067262.
