33-year-old rescued on fishing boat north of Nhulunbuy

A 33-year-old has been rescued after severely injuring his legs while fishing in his boat north of Nhulunbuy yesterday.

Around 7.45am Nhulunbuy police responded to an urgent call from a commercial fishing vessel after the man had suffered leg injuries aboard his boat.

Members from NT Police and St John NT launched PV Nhulunbuy and the patient was transferred to the police boat once found.

The man’s injuries were treated on board before he was brought to Gove Harbour and subsequently taken to Gove District Hospital via ambulance.

Acting Senior Sergeant Xavier McMahon said the event was a great example of the two emergency services working together to help someone.

“This was a great example of both St John NT and NT Police combining their experience and expertise to provide the appropriate care to the patient in a timely manner,” Mr McMahon said.

St John NT Director Ambulance Services Andrew Thomas lauded the working relationship his team have with the police.

“Nhulunbuy is a unique location in which we deliver our service.

“The excellent working relationship we share with NT Police provides us with the ability to enhance our service and provide pre-hospital care.”

Road train fall

A 67-YEAR-OLD woman fell from a road train in a rural part of the Top End.

St John NT operations manager Craig Garraway wasn’t sure what caused the woman to fall but said the woman “was probably just unloading” the road train while in the Adelaide River area.

“She’s landed on her arm and looks like she might have broken a wrist,” Mr Garraway said.

“The Adelaide River Health Clinic looked after her really well down there and then drove her up towards Darwin where we met the health clinic (staff).”

The woman was transported to the Royal Darwin Hospital where she spent Tuesday night and was “looked after”.

Bunnings saga

A MAN has narrowly avoided injury after a group of men allegedly attacked him with a stolen hatchet in a bid to steal his car on Saturday morning.

An NT Police spokesman said a group of five men allegedly broke into the Bunnings Warehouse on Bagot Rd in the early hours of the morning, stealing “tools and edged weapons”.

The NT News understands the edged weapons to be hatchets, one of which was later allegedly thrown at a man in an attempt to steal his car in Winnellie shortly after 6am.

The man was uninjured and the group then fled the scene.

The spokesman said the alleged “offenders were disturbed by an occupant, with one of the offenders throwing an edged weapon towards the occupant, missing him”.

The spokesman said the bulk of the stolen goods were recovered in bushland near the Bunnings outlet and a 23-year-old man had since been arrested, with charges expected to be laid on Saturday.

The four other men allegedly involved in the burglary are still on the run.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Bland said: “Police are currently searching for the remaining four male (alleged) offenders involved in these incidents”.

“Investigations are ongoing and we are confident we will have further arrests in the coming days,” he said.

A MAN has been arrested after allegedly assaulting police in Tennant Creek.

Police were responding to reports of an intoxicated male outside a business on Paterson Street at 11.40pm on Thursday night.

It is alleged the man became verbally abusive and threw liquid on at officers.

During arrest the man then allegedly assaulted the officers and spat at and bit one of them, causing minor injuries and requiring a disease test.

The 37-year-old man has been charged with three counts of assaulting police, one count of resiting police and one count of disorderly behaviour.

He will appear in Tennant Creek Local Court on April 24.

Caravans destroyed in Darwin blaze

FRI 7AM: TWO caravans have been destroyed after a structure fire in Girraween on Thursday evening.

Northing Territory Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene at a property on Dudley Court after it was reported to triple-0.

They found two caravans ablaze.

St John NT ambulance attended to a resident who received serious burns from the fire and was taken to hospital.

Both caravans were destroyed and an investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.

WED 1PM: TWO NT Police officers have allegedly been assaulted while on duty in separate incidents on Tuesday night.

In the first incident, a Police Auxiliary Licensing Inspector was allegedly attacked when he intervened in a domestic dispute at a licensed premises in Katherine on Tuesday evening.

The officer was allegedly pushed in the chest before the offender was apprehended with the assistance of security staff.

A 43-year-old man was charged with domestic violence offences and assault police and was due to appear in court on Wednesday.

In the second incident, officers had arrested a 35-year-old woman for alleged bail breaches and had taken her to a local health clinic in the Barkly region when she allegedly spat at police and health staff.

Assistant Commissioner Martin Dole branded the incidents “disgraceful”.

“Luckily, no workers were injured in these incidents but they are further examples of the disgraceful behaviour our members and other workers across the NT experience on a daily basis while they are just trying to go about their jobs,” he said.

7AM WED: NT Police investigate Monte’s Lounge, health centre, Alice Springs backpacker break-ins

A POPULAR Alice Springs bar and restaurant has been hit by booze thieves twice in 24 hours.

Southern Watch Commander Allan Milner said police were investigating a break in at the Monte’s Lounge overnight.

Mr Milner said the alarms were still blaring when officers arrived at the Todd St business shortly after 4.57am Wednesday.

He said the bar was broken into just 24 hours earlier, with staff arriving at work on Tuesday to find the storeroom locks broken and alcohol missing.

Mr Milner said the unknown offenders ran away with “whatever they could carry”

‘They’ve gone back there (Tuesday) evening for one reason, and they’ve gone back this morning (Wednesday) for the same reason,” he said.

Mr Milner said Monte’s Lounge was one of a dozen break-ins that Central Australian police were looking into following a busy 48-hours.

He said thieves had targeted homes, charities, backpackers, hotels and medical centres across Alice Springs.

Mr Milner said two Indigenous health services and a blood bank were targeted on Monday night, with a mobile stolen from the Red Cross Blood bank, the Purple House broken into, and a white 2018 Toyota Hilux ute nicked from the Todd St Congress facility.

He said the stolen work vehicle was later found abandoned in the Coles carpark, where a second stolen vehicle was also recovered on Tuesday morning.

Mr Milner said the white 2015 Mitsubishi outlander station wagon was stolen from a Mount Johns home on Tuesday 2am, alongside keys, wallet and cash.

He said CCTV captured footage of three suspects hopping into a taxi and heading to the Irrampenye St home, before one person drove off the stolen station wagon.

Mr Milner said police tracked the stolen car as the driver hooned through the town before being abandoned in the Coles car park.

Two backpacker lodges in The Gap were also targeted by thieves, with a break in at the Jump Inn, on Traeger Ave, on Monday night, and alcohol and a knife nicked from Toddy’s Backpackers, on Gap Rd the following evening.

Mr Milner said a break-in at the Diplomat Motel, Gregory Terrace, and Gap Community Child Care Centre, Parke Cres, on Wednesday morning were currently under investigation.

He said police were investigating after four Central Australian homes were burgled, including a Braitling break in where thieves cleared the home of furniture.

Mr Milner said thieves used a half-hour window from 9.54pm on Tuesday to “empty” a Erumba St apartment.

“We’re talking about a lot of whitegoods – the fridge and all that and furniture as well,” he said.

Mr Milner said the elaborate operation occurred while the resident was out of town with housesitters periodically checking in on their Braitling home.

A PlayStation and two pairs of shoes, boots and runners, were nicked from a Blain St home in Tennant Creek, cash and a watch were taken from a Timbira St home in Braitling, while a grey Toyota Hilux dual cab ute, with the registration number NT RASS 02, remains at large after being stolen from a Werlatye Ct home at St Johns.

Cops nab trio after series of alleged early morning ram-raids

1PM TUES: NT POLICE have arrested three men over a series of alleged ram-raids that culminated in a crash involving an innocent member of the public in Alice Springs on Monday morning.

Investigators allege the trio acquired a stolen vehicle in the early hours of the morning, which they used “to force entry to a storage room at a licenced premises” in Eastside shortly after 2.30am.

They say the same stolen vehicle was then allegedly used about half an hour later in another unlawful entry at a sporting venue in Connellan, “causing extensive property damage”, and again in a third incident at a licenced premises in the Gap at about 3.40am.

Several cartons of alcohol were also allegedly stolen from the third premises.

Detective acting Senior Sergeant Evan Kelly said police then saw the vehicle at about 6.30am and directed the driver to pull over, which he allegedly ignored, instead responding “aggressively” and “accelerating towards an unmarked police vehicle”.

Sgt Kelly said officers successfully deployed tyre spikes and the vehicle collided with another car being driven by a member of the public before coming to a stop on South Tce.

“Detectives from Strike Force Viper arrested the driver and two occupants of the stolen vehicle, who were conveyed to Alice Springs Hospital as a precautionary measure before being transported to the Alice Springs watch house, where they were charged and remanded in custody,” he said.

The driver of the other vehicle was uninjured and the three other men were due to appear in the Alice Springs Local Court on Tuesday.

A 30-year-old man stands charged with a string of offences including unlawful entry, property damage, stealing and reckless endangerment.

A 26-year-old man was charged with unlawful entry, property damage, stealing and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

A 19-year-old man was charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

Sgt Kelly urged “all community members and businesses in Alice Springs to secure vehicle keys in a safe and secure place”.

“Often these (alleged) offenders are breaking into homes and businesses specifically to steal motor vehicles to assist with further offending,” he said.

“Any vehicle theft that we can prevent minimises potential harm to members of our community and inhibits further offending.”
