Police have charged a 21-year-old man in relation to the alleged spearing of an 18-year-old woman in a remote Top End community on Sunday.

The spearing occurred in Angurugu on Groote Eylandt, with NT Police alleging it was a domestic violence incident.

The 18-year-old was reportedly found by police and local clinic staff with the spear still embedded in her head.

“Police and local clinic staff attended and located the victim conscious, with the spear still embedded,” an NT Police spokesman said.

“The victim has since been conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital via Care Flight in a serious but stable condition.”

The alleged domestic violence incident sparked a manhunt in the small remote community, which had a recorded population of 883 in the last census.

Police confirmed the alleged offender was arrested on Monday after he handed himself in to police at Angurugu Police Station.

On Tuesday he was charged with recklessly endangering serious harm (aggravated), aggravated assault, and armed with an offensive weapon.

He was set to face court on July 23.

As at the time of writing, the woman remained in Royal Darwin Hospital receiving treatment.
