THE highly anticipated murder trial of alleged Darwin gunman Ben Hoffmann will get under way in the Supreme Court on Tuesday after a series of delays.

Hoffmann, 47, was originally due to face a jury in March over the shootings in Darwin in June 2019, which resulted in the deaths of four people – Nigel Hellings, 75, Hassan Baydoun, 33, Michael Sisois, 57, and Rob Courtney, 52.

After Crown prosecutor Lloyd Babb SC and defence barrister Jon Tippett QC give their opening addresses on Tuesday morning, jurors are set to be led on a tour of the alleged crime scenes.

In February, then Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Matt Nathan SC told the court the Crown would be seeking “a series of views” for the jury.

Mr Tippett said his client would spend time caused by the delays poring over every detail of the prosecution case.

“We are ensuring that the accused reads every word of the brief and we have people out at the prison showing the accused every piece of body- worn footage and film,” he said.
